Quarterly Fast News, Spring 2005

With our compliments, please enjoy the following reader in 4 Minutes or Less.  (We know you’re busy!)

Employment Gains Again in April!  Job growth surged in the month of April and the federal unemployment rate held steady at 5.2%.  Employers hired 274,000 additional workers, reported by the U.S. Department of Labor.  Employers are adding an average of 211,000 jobs per month whereas last year they were only adding 183,000.  It now appears that the economy may not be as weak as previously predicted!  www.washingtonpost.com.  Competition for the best employees has, in some sectors, already increased.

Wisconsin Minimum Wage Raised  On May 11th a rule was announced by Governor Jim Doyle to raise minimum wage to $5.70 per hour in Wisconsin effective June 1st, 2005 with another scheduled increase to $6.50 June 1st, 2006.  The DWD adopted the emergency rule.  www.HRSteam.com/minimumwage2005.html

HRS CEO Nominated to Ernst & Young’s Entrepreneur of the Year Award   Jessica Bare Ollenburg’s longstanding achievement and innovations; her leadership to the unique direction and success of HRS; and her outstanding contributions to the business landscape, community at large and charitable concerns are just some of the criteria to this honor.  Godfrey & Kahn SC, The Kauffman Foundation, Clifton Gunderson LLP and The Business Journal Serving Greater Milwaukee have sponsored celebration events in May and upcoming in June.

New Employer Laws & Required Postings  New Child Labor Laws, USERRA Posting Requirements, Overtime Impact on Salaried Employees and more at www.HRSteam.com/postings2005.html. Discrimination and Unlawful Harassment Updates at www.HRSteam.com/harass_discrim_2005.html

Resume Fraud On The Rise Again!  While more than 80% of resumes have been previously reported to misrepresent qualifications through at least exaggeration, now more than 30% contain some type of factual error.  While most employers will still answer to expertly conducted reference checks, too many employers fail to conduct the appropriate investigations.  Employers ARE protected by law in reporting facts to other employers.   Also, beware of those fake diplomas, as a Harvard degree is available for $39 at fakediplomas.com.   Upgrade your workforce by getting and giving the facts.  Check statutes to discover employer protection in releasing information.

Better Wellness, Productivity and Attendance through Cost-Effective Ergonomics  Still far too overlooked, ergonomics continues to gain attention as studies document the benefits to employers and employees!  www.usernomics.com/workplace-ergonomics.html  Simple changes which yield great benefits include the raising of a work surface or positioning of a computer keyboard.   OSHA offers a 4-step comprehensive approach at www.osha.gov.

The Biggest Succession-Planning Mistake?  “Lack of preparation is the most common succession-planning mistake that organizations make.”  61% of those surveyed believe that most organizations do not have a capable CEO-in-waiting.  www.workindex.com/editorial/hre/hre0505-12.asp

HRS Opens New Offices!  Our Milwaukee office relocates June 3rd to Airport Atrium, directly across Howell Avenue from Mitchell International Airport.  Our Waukesha office opens July 1st in Westbrook Business Center, I-94 at Barker Road.  Both facilities shall offer expanded Assessment Center and Training facilities.  Specific announcements shall be sent upon the moves.

The Young and the Jobless!  The employment rate for the nation’s teenagers through 2004 (just 36.3%) was its lowest since the federal government began tracking teenage employment way back in 1948!  www.workplacefairness.org  This generation is suffering hours and will be entering the full-time workforce potentially less prepared than their predecessors.

Pension Plans in Short Supply!  Word on the street: More than three-quarters of the nation's traditional private pension plans currently don't have enough assets to cover the benefits already promised to workers and current retirees.  The United Airlines situation throws gasoline on the fire and widens the gap between employer and employee perception of program risks.  More and more, traditional pension plans are replaced by immediate vesting plans and other benefits offerings.

TMJ4 Partners with HRS in “Bad Bosses” Expose’   Called upon as experts, we hosted on site interviews with the TMJ4 news crew, television broadcast April 20 & 21st on all news programs.  We proudly delivered a roadmap to better leadership and better employee behavior alike.

Spyware Alert!   The State of Spyware Report to US Congress tells us that 87 percent of corporate PCs have been infected by an unwanted program of some sort. www.netcaucus.org/statistics/  Protect your network through carefully written and enforced employee usage policies, and please be careful downloading “free” remedy programs which actually install new threats!

Wisconsin Employee Motivator Survey Hits #1 Again!  Just 3 days after its launch at MMAC/COSBE’s CEO Accounting Forum in February 2005,  Google, AOL, MSN and others ranked this new finding as high as #5 worldwide for its content.  This HRS conducted survey has since moved to #1!  Nearly 1500 employees tell employers how to best allocate human capital dollars for optimal employee retention, motivation and productivity.  http://www.hrsteam.com/survey2005.html
