HR/OD Quarterly Fast News… Fall 2004

To save you time... we research, compile and report highly relevant quick news and global/local headlines!

With our compliments, please enjoy the following reader in 4 Minutes or Less

More US Jobs Created!  According to the US Department of Labor, significant new jobs have been added to our workforce during each of the past 6 months.  Unemployment has steadily lowered.  Since April, the average hourly pay has increased at an annualized rate of 2.4%.  More info at http://www.bls.gov/eag/eag.us.htm.

Turnover Cost Calculators Lack Accuracy.  As employers continue to add employees and find other employees lured away by new opportunities elsewhere, turnover re-emerges as a drain to the corporate bottom line.  Most published calculation methods fail to consider one or more of the following:  training cost, corporate time involved with recruitment & selection, contagiousness/frustration with turnover causing other employees to leave, and of course, productivity lost/waste incurred with lesser trained employees performing tasks.  Please factor these costs in when calculating turnover toward strategic planning and human capital investment decisions.

Administrative & Business Development Hiring Rebound!  Following the creation and retention of new manufacturing jobs, employers are now adding administrative support and investing into business development practices.

Raising the Minimum Wage???  Strong concern exists!  The majority of jobs pay minimum plus X.  Raising minimum wage creates a spiral upward for all jobs, creating more hardship for US employers and potentially impeding domestic job creation/economic stimulation.

Counteroffers are Back!  In a business growth cycle with bottleneck short term demands, a bidding war for employees emerges.  Employees need to beware of "too good to be true" offers.  Employers need to beware of new recruits being bribed to stay on at old jobs, just until they are replaced.  Have a candidate considering a counteroffer?  Direct them to www.AskHRS.com/counterofferset.html.

New HRS Offices!  HRS is expanding to new locations.  With a trained eye on controlled growth and quality commitment, we are planning new offices beginning in 2005.  Look for our Waukesha facility to open first.  National and multi-national HRS clients have requested our presence in additional US cities.  Look for upcoming national expansion as well!  We strongly appreciate The Business Journal Serving Greater Milwaukee continuing to recognize us among the top 5 largest in our field.  And while our goal is to be the best, not the biggest, we appreciate the client loyalty and referrals which keep us growing and building upon our resources!
