EEOC Fact Sheet On Employment Tests and Selection Procedures
A newly updated fact sheet from the U.S. Equal Employment Opportunity
Commission gives employers a concise briefing on what they may and may not
do when screening potential new hires.
(See Fact Sheet).
This includes employer best practices, a summary of key EEO laws affecting
hiring and screening, and recent litigation and case summaries in this
important area. As always, avoid testing which arguably discriminates
against protected classes or investigates "out of bounds" personality
characteristics.

Baby Boomers and Gen Y need to connect! Now
recognized as media and podium experts on the topic, our CEO's thoughts are
showcased in a recent
Scottsdale@Work magazine cover story.
This winter we've also provided keynote workshops on this topic to the
Financial HR Association and the Society of Human Resource Processionals,
with accreditation by the HR Certification Institute. And for these
generations, how/when
do job security and career advancement trade places as the #1 employee
magnet? What does job security really mean to today's and tomorrow's
workforce?

Companies Going
Green
More corporations
are going "green" and discovering that helping the environment isn't the
only payoff. Eco-friendly policies can also help companies attract
young talent, increase productivity and reduce costs. "Students are
looking to work for companies that care about the environment," says Lindsey
Pollak, author of "Getting From College to Career." "They are almost
expecting greenness like they expect work-life balance, ethnic diversity and
globalization." A recent poll on green employment by MonsterTRAK.com,
a job Web site geared toward students and entry-level hires, found that 80%
of young professionals are interested in securing a job that has a positive
impact on the environment, and 92% would be more inclined to work for a
company that is environmentally friendly.

"There's
No Crying in Business!"
"Tears don't work in the workplace," says Nancy Albertini, chairwoman of
Patterson & Blackstone in San Jose, Calif. "People
view tears as manipulative. When a person cries, people around them don't know
what to do." Research shows that crying on the job can be far more
damaging to a woman's career than to a man's. A study at Penn State on gender
and the perception of crying found that both women and men reacted more
favorably to men who teared up. And both men and women were looked at more
positively when they teared up than when they cried.

Employer Call to Action: Replace
"Sick" Leave with "Personal" Leave
To promote wellness and honesty in the workplace, HRS continues to advocate
policies allowing "Personal Days" to replace and include
"Sick Days." Almost one-third of employees admitted to calling in sick
to work last year even though they weren't ill, according to
CareerBuilder.com's annual survey. Fortunately for employees, 75 percent of
employers believe their employees are sick when they say they are.
Where medical leave applies, retain ability by policy to gain opinion from a
company preferred physician. And, of course, teach your employees into
budgeting for unanticipated actual "sick" days.
