Quarterly Fast News in 4 Minutes or Less, Summer 2005  (We know you’re busy!)

Employment Figures Still On a Roll!   “July's employment figures show widespread gains with 207,000 new jobs. We have had 26 straight months of job growth,  a record high for the seventh consecutive month. The unemployment rate remained low at 5% - below the average of the 1970s, 1980s and 1990s.  Average hourly earnings saw the largest increase in a year.”  U.S. Labor Secretary Elaine L. Chao reports @ www.dol.gov

HRS Cover Story by Small Business Times    If you missed this summer's highly acclaimed "Benefits of Outsourcing Human Resources", featuring "The 5 Signs a Company Should Outsource HR" with our CEO on the cover plus a profile of HRS client success, here it is: BizTimes Article PDF.

"I've always found that the speed of the boss is the speed of the team."  Lee Iacocca

Wisconsin's in the Top 5, But that's Not a Good Thing!   According to survey conducted by AOL and Salary.com, workers admit wasting 2+ hours each day surfing the web, socializing or just plain "spacing out!"  Wisconsin ranks 4th nationally with a startling average of 2.8 wasted hours every day.  More info at http://moneycentral.msn.com/P123102.asp and http://money.cnn.com/2005/07/08/pf/wastedtime_job/

Starting Salaries Up for College Grads   Starting salaries for new college graduates are higher than a year ago, according to the summer 2005 issue of Salary Survey, a quarterly report from the National Association of Colleges and Employers (NACE).  http://www.shrm.org/CMS_013346.asp#P-11_0

Building Teams?  Start with the Individuals   According to widespread study, too many employers are still jumping too soon into teambuilding exercises with individuals not suited for and not buying into the team's goals.  Focus early on the individuals.  1) Assess each employee for team skills at hire, 2) Investigate individual motivators, 3) Negotiate the commitment, and then 4) Teach them how to get there!   "On board" and motivate the right team members before investing into teambuilding.

"Individual commitment to a group effort - that is what makes a team work, a company work, a society work, a civilization work."  Vince Lombardi

Why People Avoid Conflict Resolution   Updated study: employees may feel threatened by conflict resolution because they may not get what they want if the other party gets what they want.  People are unskilled at resolution and lack skills in continuing to work together after the conflict.  Successfully navigating a conflict can lead to heightened productivity and new ideas.  http://humanresources.about.com/cs/conflictresolves/a/conflictcourage_p.htm

Blogging vs. Boarding?   Employee weblogs provide improved media for employee communications, feedback and suggestions.  Gaining in popularity, employers learn how to best use this updated technology.  Visit http://www.commoncraft.com/archives/000768.html for an interesting perspective on the differences between a blog and a message board.  Visit http://seattlepi.nwsource.com/business/129927_msftblog08.html for Microsoft's case studies.

HR Outsourcing the Smart Way to Go  According to a recent survey by Hewitt Associates, more than 60% of HR directors and business leaders outsource part or all of HR administration!  By contracting out internal promotion decisions, candidate decision buy-in is optimized while the sting of rejection is minimized.  By outsourcing hiring, education, and other HR processes, companies reduce costs, improve service levels, and free up time to focus on critical business issues.  As the industry matures and brand name companies such as Prudential, Sony and Proctor & Gamble sign multiyear HR business process outsourcing (HRBPO) agreements, more companies are exploring broad-based HR outsourcing.  http://www.hotjobs.com/htdocs_2005_07_19

New Employee Benefit:  Identity Theft Protection   The leading cause of identity theft is now theft of employment/payroll records according to a report by TransUnion.  Forward-looking companies are starting to add identity-theft education and/or prevention services as a workplace benefit. More info at http://www.workindex.com/finarc-0507-02.asp,  and    http://www.riderlaw.com/ARTICLE_TYPE_ID=2 and  http://www.scambusters.org/id-theft.html  and  http://www.privacyrights.org/fs/fs17-it.htm.

Excuses, Excuses!   "My cat unplugged my alarm clock."   "My garage door is broken."   "I couldn't find my shoes."  35% of workers say they called in sick when they weren't at least once over a 12-month period, according to August survey.  Article:  Los Angeles Times & Washington Post

What is Appropriate Business Casual Wear?   More than 70% of all American companies now have some sort of ‘casual’ policy.  For sample dress code policies:  http://humanresources.about.com/od/workrelationships/a/dress_code.htm
